It was a cliché. It was the sort of thing that Duo had seen on poor quality television screens when he had lived at the orphanage. He had been obsessed with those old horror movies where someone would say that "they had a bad feeling" about something and then the inevitable would happen. They'd be chased, they'd be cornered and then they'd die. He'd seen it so many times on L2 where they had repeated some old movies that they had the rights to that Duo had felt cheesy thinking it as he boarded the old Alliance cruiser. But he had. He even nearly whispered it as he boarded. He didn't say it yet he'd had a very bad feeling the moment he was no longer safely aboard Deathscythe. The moment the plan started. It didn't feel right. The ship felt claustrophobic and despite Duo's most charming smile and most friendly chatter, he knew that the men he was dealing with didn't care for him nor what he was offering. Why the hell should they? Duo was essentially offering one guy. Yeah, he was promising to get them more - promising that he worked around the bars and docks full of healthy young ex-war vets who would do just about anything for a few drinks but still this was a big powerful organisation. Duo doubted that they cared and he doubted he was offering them anything worth their while. He was nothing to them and it became apparent as they talked. He felt the sinking feeling the moment the negotiations started. The negotiations were held in what had probably once been a cell and the small space and atmosphere inside the square metallic box had not been pleasant. Duo knew they were trying to get him off-balance, to make him feel off-kilter and they achieved that very effectively. Within a few minutes talking to the men, Duo knew they had merely been fishing for information about his knowledge about their organisation and didn't want what he was offering. And within those few minutes, Duo wished he had an exit strategy that did not involve Heero being defrosted. The sinking feel only got worse when they "inspected" Heero. Duo was instructed to bring Heero aboard for the medical team to review and he had done as instructed. The inspection was another uncomfortable experience and Duo had felt utterly helpless as he watched them plug in a tablet to analyse the data and talk to one another in hushed whispers. Duo had tried to interject a few times, to mention how Heero was a worthwhile purchase and how he could ensure that there would be many more like him that Duo could provide but they didn't seem interested. He was left in the corner to grit his teeth and try to not let his anger grow due to the hopelessness of the situation. Once Heero was inspected, they stressed that he was a fine specimen. However, they seemed reticent to make a commitment and Duo knew that no matter what he did he stood no chance of using his charisma to make a sale. As this had never been about a sale and business agreement. In that moment, Duo could only silently seethe about Preventer and their incompetent intelligence and how they had sent them on a suicide mission. Their only hope was that Heero could do what he needed to. Just as the inspection was complete, Duo had made a joke about wanting to see his cargo one last time. "I've become fond of him, you know," he had joked, a fake smile plastered on his face as he'd walked back close to the viewing panel on the cryo chamber. "After all, I tricked him into this whole shit with a promise of some hardcore tranqs. The guy had sure seen some stuff in the war... needed them to sleep. Guess now he's sleepin'." The men had humoured him, briefly, and that had allowed Duo the opportunity to find the release button on the side of the cryo chamber. The small push was barely noticeable and Duo continued to talk hoping that his inane babble was enough to distract. It often worked, pretending to be dumber than he was, and Duo knew it provided a brief distraction. Yet it also gave him an opportunity to see Heero's face. As through that panel he still looked peaceful. Even though hell was about to break lose. "Wonder what they dream about? Don't you?" Duo had continued. "In cryo or drugged or whatever... or is it just black, you know?" His chatter had seemed to work. But only for a little as then it went south. Boy, did it go south. It seemed they were willing to keep up the pretence a little longer. The pretence that they actually cared about what Duo had to say. But that pretence slipped during the "tour." Duo wondered why they bothered showing him. Maybe they were just sick fucks but Duo was shown the room, the large medical bay that had become the home to the people who were trapped inside their own bodies. He supposed it was meant to be impressive and it would be impressive to some but Duo felt sick as he walked down the middle and viewed all the people who were laid on the beds. Maybe they'd wanted to show how powerful they were and how powerless Duo was. It was successful as Duo did suddenly feel out of his depth in a way he had never really felt. He'd been powerless, he'd been weak but he'd never felt so overwhelmed and so utterly small. , Duo had seen death and destruction before. He'd seen the dying and helpless and the starving. He'd inflicted enough death in his life too. Yet seeing life being used in such a way was more horrifying than anything Duo had ever seen. Duo could see the wires, the tubes and the scars. He could see the missing limbs and the eyes and those people who had become nothing more than parts. It was so damn wrong and Duo knew they were screwed. As people who did that to people didn't negotiate. And sure as hell they didn't need some little guy. He should've expected it. Should've expected the moment they were going to turn. Duo was able to read situations pretty easily. That was what years on the battlefield did but more than that. It was years of growing up on the streets, of living day to day and meal to meal. He knew how to assess situations and how to react. Yet he was late. And he was cornered. That left very little he could do in response. The hit to his back was sharp and hard. It took him to his knees and in turn Duo reacted to that. He lashed out - all wild fists and miss timed kicks but he was outnumbered and outgunned. He felt the futility of being trapped - the knowledge that this whole thing was going to hell but Duo fought. Hell, did he fight. Duo had never been trained to fight. Heero had this elegance, this poise and strength and Duo had none of it. Fondly, Solo had described Duo as an "alley cat" during their street days and Duo had been proud of that nickname. As he fought like he had no style and control. Instead he just fought to survive. He did that. Tried to fight like he had nothing left to lose and while it took five men, Duo was taken down. And once he was on the floor, even though he was kicking and biting and spitting, he felt the pinprick of a needle and he knew he could no longer resist. Duo knew then it was well and truly done - he struggled and he swore, but it did no good against the power of the chemicals entering his bloodstream. Thrashing, uselessly, he issued a pointless threat. "We're Preventer, assholes!" he spat, his voice sounding harsh. "They know we're here and they'll find you." One of the men laughed. He laughed as he stood in a white coat like any other doctor. Though he wasn't a doctor and Duo thought about telling him so - that he was a butcher but the words didn't come out, his tongue suddenly feeling heavy and cloying in his own mouth. "We'll move. They'll never find us or you." The drug didn't take long to get into his system. They were strong - far stronger than anything medicinal and legal. Duo knew that as it hit him like a freight train and within seconds he felt the weakness, the loss of control and the blackness that threatened to consume him. On the floor, the metal felt cool and Duo spent the last few seconds of consciousness figuring out his current situation. Isolated. Alone. Drugged. The words all swirled around his head as he felt the loss of control. Hell, Duo had been in a lot of sucky situations yet this seemed like it could be the worst. But then he wasn't alone. There was Heero. Somewhere stored aboard the piece of shit cruiser was Heero Yuy. He would be just coming 'round from cryo, he would be messing with their computer systems and he would be able to rescue Duo's scrawny ass before he lost any vital organs or limbs. Or at least that was what Duo convinced himself of as the world went black. As he really didn't want to lose a limb for an organisation he didn't believe in. And sure as hell he didn't want lose his life. Or Heero's. |
